instagram bioThe short answer
A good Instagram bio has three parts: who you are or who you help, a reason to trust you, and what to do next. You have 150 characters according to Instagram's Help Center, so keep every word working. Fill in the templates below, read the result aloud and cut anything that does not help a stranger decide to follow or tap.

On this page
Your bio is the short text under your name and photo. People read it in a few seconds to decide whether to follow you, message you or tap your link. Most bios waste that moment with a quote or a list of words. This guide gives you a formula, templates to fill in and a few examples of weak bios made stronger.
The short version
Write three things, in this order:
- Who you are or who you help.
- Why someone should trust you.
- What to do next.
You have 150 characters in total, according to Instagram’s Help Center, so every word has to earn its place. Our guide to the Instagram bio character limit covers what fits.
Step by step
1. Decide what your bio is for
A bio can try to get you followers, customers, bookings or listeners. Pick one. A bio that asks for everything gets nothing.
2. Choose one audience
Write for one kind of person: first-time home buyers, new parents, small cafes, people learning to bake. A specific audience is easier to speak to and easier for people to remember.
3. Write the first line
Say who you are or who you help, plus a place if you work locally. “Helping first-time buyers in [City]” beats “Realtor | Dreams | Homes”.
4. Add one reason to trust you
Give something true and specific: how long you have worked, what you are known for, how you work. Do not invent numbers. If you are new, your approach is a good proof point.
5. End with the next step
Tell people what to do: book, order, watch, message, download. A short line with an arrow pointing to your link is enough: “Free valuation 👇”.
6. Put your link in the website field
Instagram has a separate field for your website, so you do not have to spend characters on the address. If you want one link that holds several things, use a link in bio page.
7. Read it aloud
If you cannot say it in one breath, cut it. Then show it to a friend who does not know you and ask: “What do I do?” If they cannot tell you, rewrite it.
Templates to fill in
Tap a line to copy it, then replace the parts in square brackets.
- [Who you help] in [city] | [Reason to trust you] | [Next step] 👇
- [What you make or sell] for [who it is for] | [What makes it different] | [How to order] 👇
- [Your job] based in [city] | [One result or specialty] | [How to book] 👇
- [Your topic], explained simply | [How often you post] | [Where to find more] 👇
- I help [who] to [result] | [Proof or approach] | [Free resource or next step] 👇
Weak bios made stronger
| Before | After |
|---|---|
| “Dreamer / Coffee lover / Living my best life” | “Barista and coffee roaster in [City]. Beans shipped weekly. Shop 👇” |
| “Realtor / Dream homes / DM me” | “Helping first-time buyers in [City]. Free valuation 👇” |
| “Photographer ✨ Capturing moments” | “Wedding photographer in [City]. Natural light, relaxed couples. Booking 2027 👇” |
The strong versions say what the person does, for whom, where, and what to do next.
What to avoid
- Generic words: “passionate”, “dreamer”, “your trusted partner”.
- No next step. If a visitor likes you, tell them what to do.
- Too many emojis. They use up room and make the bio harder to read.
- A long list of everything you do. Pick the one thing you want to be known for.
- Out-of-date information. Check it monthly.

Two free tools
To style your bio, the free Instagram font generator turns your text into bold, script and other lettering to copy and paste. Some devices and screen readers show styled letters badly, so keep the key words in plain text. If you are still choosing what to call your account, try the Instagram username generator.
After the bio: the link
The bio gets attention and the link gets action. A Linkerzz page is free to start, and it gives your link a page with your links, a contact form and a template made for your kind of work.
