The short answer

Your bio is the text under your name on your profile. To change it, open your profile, tap Edit profile, change the bio and save. On the web, click your profile picture, choose Edit profile and submit. Your bio can be up to 150 characters, according to Instagram's Help Center, and your link goes in a separate website field.

Linkerzz makes a link-in-bio page builder and is not affiliated with Instagram, TikTok or any other app named here. Facts about other apps were checked on October 16, 2026. Apps change their menus often, so trust the app's own help page if yours looks different.

Your bio is easy to find and easy to change, but the steps differ slightly between the app and the website, and Instagram sometimes moves things around. This guide covers where your bio is, how to edit it on a phone and on a computer, what you can put in it and what to do if it will not save.

Where is the bio on Instagram?

New to the word? What a bio on Instagram is explains the parts of a profile.

Open your profile. The bio is the short text under your name and profile photo. Anyone who visits your profile can read it, so it is the first thing a stranger sees about you.

How to edit your bio on the app

Instagram’s Help Center describes these steps for the mobile app:

  1. Open your profile.
  2. Tap Edit profile.
  3. Change your bio. You can write up to 150 characters.
  4. Save: tap Done on an iPhone, or the checkmark on Android.

If your screen looks different, Instagram may have updated the layout. Look for Edit profile on your profile page.

How to edit your bio on a computer

Instagram’s Help Center describes these steps for the website:

  1. Go to instagram.com and log in.
  2. Click your profile picture or username, then choose Edit profile.
  3. Change your bio.
  4. Click Submit at the bottom.

What can I put in my bio?

  • Your words, up to 150 characters. Our guide to the bio character limit shows what fits.
  • A link, in the separate website field on the same screen. For several links in one, use a link in bio page. To learn how to add it, see How to add a link in bio on Instagram and TikTok.
  • Hashtags and other accounts. When you type # or @ in your bio, Instagram suggests matches, and the ones you select become links, according to Instagram’s announcement.
  • Emojis and line breaks, if they help. Use them sparingly.

What if my bio will not save?

Instagram’s Help Center says the error can appear when you have entered something that is not allowed, such as certain characters or links that ask people to add you on another service. Try this:

  1. Remove emojis, symbols and unusual characters and try again.
  2. Take out any text that asks people to add you on another app.
  3. Make sure the bio is no longer than 150 characters.
  4. Close and reopen the app, or try the website.

What should my bio say?

If you are not sure what to write, read How to write a bio for Instagram for a three-part formula and templates, and Instagram bio ideas for ready-made examples you can copy.

After you change it

Open your profile from another account, or ask a friend to, and read it like a stranger would. Check that your link works. If you use a Linkerzz page, put its address in the website field and check that it opens on a phone.
