How to post a YouTube video on Instagram (the right way)

instagramThe short answer
You cannot paste a YouTube link into an Instagram post and have it play. Share the link in a Story with a link sticker, put it in your bio, or upload your own video file as a Reel. Do not re-upload someone else's video without permission.
Linkerzz makes a link-in-bio page builder and is not affiliated with Instagram, TikTok or any other app named here. Facts about other apps were checked on October 12, 2026. Apps change their menus often, so trust the app's own help page if yours looks different.

You made a video on YouTube and you want your Instagram followers to see it. The catch is that Instagram does not play YouTube videos. If you paste a link into a post, it does not play and is not clickable in a caption. Here are the ways that do work, and one that you should avoid.
Option 1: Share the link in a Story
A Story can carry a clickable link. Instagram’s own announcement says the link sticker is open to all creators and businesses.
- On YouTube, open the video and tap Share, then Copy link.
- In Instagram, start a new Story and choose a photo or video, for example a screenshot or a short clip from the video.
- Tap the sticker icon and choose Link.
- Paste the address and add a short label such as “Watch the full video”.
- Place the sticker where it is easy to see and post.
Viewers tap the sticker and the video opens in YouTube or their browser. They do not play it inside Instagram.
Not everyone sees the link sticker. Instagram says new accounts, and accounts that repeatedly break its Community Guidelines, may not have access to it.
Option 2: Put the YouTube link in your link in bio
If you want people to find the video later, not only for the 24 hours your Story lasts, put it in your profile:
- Open your profile and tap Edit profile.
- Add the YouTube address in the link or website field.
- Mention it in your post: “New video, link in bio”.
The catch is that a bio link holds your latest video only until you replace it. That is the reason many creators send people to a page with all their links, so the address in the bio never changes.
Option 3: Upload your own video as a Reel
If the video is yours, you can post it on Instagram itself. Use the original file you made, not a copy downloaded from YouTube, so the quality stays high and you do not carry over other people’s watermarks.
- Check that the video suits Instagram. Most Reels are vertical, and Instagram has its own length limits that change from time to time, so look at the limit in the app.
- Cut a short, strong clip from the video, not the whole thing. A 30-second teaser works better than a long upload.
- Upload it as a Reel and add a line such as “Full video on YouTube, link in bio”.
What not to do: re-post someone else’s video
It is tempting to download a video you like and post it with credit. YouTube’s help pages are clear that this is not safe:
- The copyright usually belongs to the person who made the video.
- Giving credit does not give you the right to use it.
- Saying you will not make money from it does not settle the question either.
- Fair use is decided case by case, and nobody can promise it will apply to you.
If it is not your video, share the link instead. The creator gets the views and you stay out of trouble.
Show the video on your link in bio page
An Instagram post cannot play a YouTube video, but a page can. With Linkerzz you can claim your link for free and add an embed block. Paste a YouTube address and the page shows the video as a card that your visitor taps to play. Nothing from YouTube loads until they tap, so the page stays fast.
Put that page in your Instagram bio, add your other links next to the video, and change the video whenever you publish a new one. The address in your bio stays the same.
A quick checklist
- Copy the link from YouTube’s Share button.
- Use a Story link sticker for new videos.
- Keep one stable link in your bio.
- Upload only your own videos as Reels.
- Say where to find the full video, in words, in every post.
Frequently asked questions
Can I paste a YouTube link in an Instagram caption?
You can paste it, but a link in a caption is not clickable, and Instagram does not play the video. Use a Story link sticker or your bio link instead.
Can people watch the YouTube video inside Instagram?
No. Tapping a link opens YouTube or your browser. To show the video itself on Instagram, you upload the video file as a Reel.
Can I post someone else's YouTube video on Instagram?
Not without their permission. Copyright usually belongs to the creator, and giving credit does not give you the right to reuse the video. Share the link instead.
Why can I not see the link sticker?
Instagram says new accounts and accounts that repeatedly break its Community Guidelines may not have access to the link sticker.
How long can an Instagram video be?
Instagram changes its limits for Reels and Stories from time to time, so check the limit in the app when you upload. A link needs no video at all.
