Does Instagram notify screenshots? Stories, posts, DMs

instagram storyThe short answer
No, not for a regular story. Instagram's 2026 guide to stories says it does not notify someone when you screenshot a regular story. Disappearing photos and videos in direct messages are different, and Instagram's own pages do not fully agree on what happens, so do not count on a screenshot going unnoticed. The poster can see that you viewed their story.

Screenshots of stories are everywhere: a recipe someone shared, a great quote, a friend’s announcement. So it is natural to wonder whether the person knows. This guide gives the answer for stories, explains where the rules are different, and says what is polite.
The short answer
For a regular story, no. Instagram’s own guide to stories says Instagram does not notify someone when you screenshot their story.
Two things are different:
| Does the other person find out? | |
|---|---|
| Screenshot of a regular story | Not according to Instagram’s guide to stories |
| Screenshot of a disappearing photo or video in a message | Different: see below |
| Viewing a story | Yes, they can see that you viewed it |
Quick answers
- Does Instagram tell someone when you screenshot their story? Not for a regular story.
- Can people see if you screenshot their Instagram story? Not through a notification, but they can see that you viewed it.
- Does Instagram show screenshots of posts or reels? Instagram’s help pages describe no notification for those.
- What about disappearing photos and videos in messages? Treat those as the exception: Instagram says they can notify, and screenshots may be blocked.
Stories: screenshots and views
When you open someone’s story, Instagram’s Help Center says they’ll be able to tell that you’ve seen it. A screenshot, by contrast, does not send a notification for a regular story.
If you want to know who looked at your own story, see Can you see who views your Instagram profile?.
Disappearing photos and videos in messages
Photos and videos you send in direct messages can be set to disappear after they are viewed. For these, Instagram’s own pages do not fully agree. Its 2026 guide to stories says disappearing photos and videos sent in DMs are the exception and will trigger a notification. Its Help Center says the sender can see whether a disappearing photo or video was seen, and that taking a screenshot is now disabled for one you have sent in a chat. The safe assumption is that a screenshot of one of these may be blocked or reported, so do not count on it going unnoticed. If you are sending something private, remember that another device can still capture the screen.
Instagram changes its features often, and this includes how it handles screenshots. If you rely on this for something sensitive, check the current help pages in the app.
Posts and reels
Instagram’s help pages describe no notification when someone screenshots a feed post or a reel, so the rules for stories and disappearing messages do not apply to them.
Is it okay to screenshot someone’s story?
Instagram does not tell them, but that does not make it right in every case. A few rules of thumb:
- Ask first if you plan to share it, especially if it shows a person, a private moment or something that is not public.
- Credit the person if you post their work or their words.
- Do not share private stories, such as ones sent to a close friends list.
- Remember that screenshots last long after a story expires.
If you want to share someone’s story properly, Instagram has a built-in way to add it to your own. We explain it in How to repost a story on Instagram.
If you share stories for work
If you use stories to promote a business, assume that anything you post can be screenshotted and shared. Put your best information in a place you control: add a link sticker to your story that opens your page, as shown in How to add a link to your Instagram story. A Linkerzz page is free to start.
