The short answer

Open your story, tap the sticker tool, choose Link, enter the web address and tap Done, then place the sticker. New accounts and accounts that repeatedly break Instagram's rules cannot use it. Link to one page that does one clear thing, and tell viewers what they will get when they tap.

A story is one of the best places to point people to something, because viewers are already paying attention. The link sticker is how you do it. This guide shows how to add one, who can use it and how to get people to tap.

The short answer

  1. Open your story in the camera and add your photo or video.
  2. Tap the sticker tool.
  3. Choose Link.
  4. Enter the web address and tap Done.
  5. Drag the sticker into place. Tap it to change its colour or its text.

Instagram’s announcement describes this flow. Menus and labels can change, so look for the sticker tool if yours looks different.

Instagram says new accounts, and accounts that repeatedly post content that breaks its Community Guidelines, cannot use the link sticker. If you cannot find it:

  • Update the Instagram app.
  • Check that your account is not new or restricted.
  • Look in the sticker tray again, since Instagram occasionally moves stickers.

Word the sticker so people tap

You can edit the sticker’s text, so use that. “Tap here” says nothing. A label that names what people get does better:

  • Book a session
  • See the listings
  • Get the free guide
  • Shop the new drop

Put the sticker where it is easy to reach with a thumb, and make sure it is not hidden by text or by the story’s own buttons. Say what the link is for in the story itself, with one short line.

  • One page, one job. A booking page, a product or a sign-up form works because the viewer knows what to do when they land.
  • A page that works on a phone. Most viewers are on one. Open the link on your own phone before you post.
  • A fast page. A slow page loses people who tapped on impulse.
  • A page that lists everything, if you have several offers. A link in bio page holds your booking, your shop and your contact form behind one address.

Where In one story On your profile, always
Lasts While the story is live Until you change it

Use both. The sticker sends people to the thing you are talking about right now. The bio link catches everyone who visits your profile later. For more on the bio link, read How to add a link in bio on Instagram and TikTok.

Check that it works

After you post, open your own story from another account, or ask a friend to, and tap the sticker. Check that it opens the right page and that the page looks right on a phone. If you use a Linkerzz page, you can see how many people viewed it and which links they tapped, so you know whether the story worked.

Make the page worth the tap

A link is only as good as what it opens. A Linkerzz page is free to start, with templates for real estate agents, photographers, coaches and more. Put the page behind your story sticker, and behind your bio link, and everyone who is interested lands in the same place.

Frequently asked questions

How do I add a link to an Instagram story?

Open your story, tap the sticker tool, choose Link, enter the web address and tap Done. Then drag the sticker into place.

Why can I not add a link to my story?

Instagram says new accounts, and accounts that repeatedly post content that breaks its Community Guidelines, cannot use the link sticker. If you are missing it, update the app and check your account status in the app.

Can I change what the link sticker says?

Yes. You can edit the sticker's text, so a label such as Book a session tells viewers what they will get.

What should I link to in a story?

One page that does one clear thing, such as a booking page, a product or a sign-up form. If you have several things, link to a link in bio page that lists them.

Is a link sticker better than the link in my bio?

They do different jobs. The sticker sends viewers to one place from one story. The bio link is always on your profile, so it is best for a page that holds everything.
