How to put a WhatsApp link in your Instagram bio

The short answer
Build a link from wa.me/ and your number in full international form, add it in the Instagram app under Edit profile, then Links (up to 5), or put a WhatsApp button on a link page next to your other links. Test it on your own phone first.
Linkerzz makes a link-in-bio page builder and is not affiliated with Instagram, TikTok or any other app named here. Facts about other apps were checked on November 3, 2026. Apps change their menus often, so trust the app's own help page if yours looks different.

Most small businesses on Instagram get their enquiries in direct messages, and many of their customers would rather use WhatsApp. A WhatsApp link in your Instagram bio lets people start a chat with you in one tap. Here is how to make the link and where to put it.
Step 1: make your WhatsApp link
WhatsApp calls this feature click to chat. Its Help Center gives the format:
https://wa.me/919876543210
After wa.me/ comes your phone number in full international format: country code first, then the number. WhatsApp says to omit any zeroes, brackets or dashes. Its own example of what not to use is a number written with a plus sign, zeroes, brackets and dashes. So an Indian number written as +91 98765 43210 becomes 919876543210.
WhatsApp says click to chat works on both your phone and WhatsApp Web, and that people do not need your number saved in their address book. They need an active WhatsApp account, and you need yours.
Add a first message (optional)
You can pre-fill what the person is about to send, by adding ?text= and the message, URL-encoded (a space becomes %20):
https://wa.me/919876543210?text=Hi%2C%20I%20found%20you%20on%20Instagram
The person still presses send, so it is a starting point. Make it specific: “Hi, I would like to book a session” tells you more than “Hi”.
There is also a version without a number, https://wa.me/?text=.... WhatsApp says that after tapping it, the person is shown a list of contacts to send the message to. That is not what you want in a bio, so always include your number.
Our free WhatsApp link generator does the formatting for you, and the WhatsApp link and QR code guide covers printed QR codes.
Step 2: test it on your own phone
Tap the link on your phone before you share it. It should open a chat with your number. If WhatsApp says the number is not on WhatsApp, check the country code and any leading zero.
Step 3: add it to your Instagram bio
These steps come from Instagram’s Help Center page, “Add a website to your Instagram profile”:
- Tap your profile picture in the bottom right to go to your profile.
- Tap Edit profile.
- Tap Links, then tap Add external link (iPhone) or Add link (Android), and paste your WhatsApp link.
- Tap Done.
Instagram says you can add up to 5 websites. It also says adding a website is not available on the web app, so do this in the Instagram app on your phone. If the link does not save or is not clickable, our checklist for a bio link that is not working goes through the usual causes.
Option: a link page with a WhatsApp button
A direct WhatsApp link uses one of your five places and sends everyone to a chat. If you also want people to see your work, prices or booking link first, put one link page in your bio instead, with a WhatsApp button on it next to your other links.
| Direct WhatsApp link | Link page with a WhatsApp button | |
|---|---|---|
| Places used in your bio | One of up to five | One |
| What people see first | A chat with you | Your page, then the button |
| Change it later | Edit your profile | Edit the page, the bio stays the same |
| Other things on it | None | Links, pictures, contact form, prices |
On a Linkerzz page, the WhatsApp button block takes your number and a first message, checks them, and builds the link for you. It opens a chat with you on the visitor’s own WhatsApp, and the free plan includes it. We do not use the WhatsApp Business platform, so there is nothing to connect and nothing to pay for.
Tips that get you more messages
- Say what the chat is for. “Book a session on WhatsApp” gets more taps than “Contact”.
- Use a number you are happy to share. The number is in the link, and Instagram says anyone, on or off Instagram, can see the websites on your profile.
- Use a different first message for each place. If your bio link says “I found you on Instagram” and your flyer says “I saw your flyer”, you know where each chat came from.
- Answer fast. A chat that starts with one tap is a warm lead. Reply while they are still holding the phone.
Put it where people will see it
Your Instagram bio is one place. The same link works in your TikTok bio, on a flyer as a QR code, on your menu or shop counter, in your email signature and on your Google Business profile.
